Part 1 - Introduction to Garment Construction

This is a foundation course that will impart you with skills needed to construct a simple blouse-like garment and finish it completely with fasteners like hook-eye and zipper. There is a brief introduction to sewing machine operation and single needle lockstitch machine (SNLS Machine).

The lockstitch uses two threads, an upper and a lower. To make one stitch, the machine lowers the threaded needle through the cloth into the bobbin area, where a rotating hook (or other hooking mechanism) catches the upper thread at the point just after it goes through the needle.

For domestic purposes you can buy a portable power operated SNLS machine which comes with a range of decorative stitches. Usha, Singer and Brother are some good brands that offer such machines at good prices. These machines are provided with a variety of presser foot - regular, zipper, pico, button hole etc. Read the manual of the sewing machine and use the right type of presser foot during this project.
